Valencia, Why Now?
Why Spain’s Mediterranean city is having a production moment
There’s something happening in Valencia. Long loved for its light, coastline and unmistakably Mediterranean character, Spain’s third-largest city is increasingly catching the eye of international producers, directors and photographers. With historic streets, bold contemporary architecture, beaches and dramatically different landscapes all within easy reach, Valencia offers the kind of creative range that can make a brief feel bigger without making the production more complicated. So why is the city having a moment, and why should it be on more production radars now?
Spain has never been short of extraordinary places to shoot. Barcelona, Madrid and Mallorca are firmly established on the international production map, but Valencia offers something a little different: a city with a strong identity of its own that still retains a sense of discovery.
Part of its appeal is the sheer variety of visual worlds sitting remarkably close together.
In the heart of the city, centuries-old streets, tiled façades, elegant plazas and Modernist architecture give way to the bold, futuristic forms of the City of Arts and Sciences. Head towards the coast and the city opens onto wide Mediterranean beaches, while beyond the urban centre the landscape changes again - from agricultural land and orange groves to the wetlands, rice fields and huge skies of the L’Albufera National Park.
When shooting commercials that proximity matters. Different looks don’t necessarily mean different production bases or major company moves. A brief can evolve considerably within Valencia and its surrounding region, giving directors and photographers room to be ambitious while keeping the practicalities manageable.
But there’s another reason Valencia feels particularly interesting right now: it hasn’t been overexposed.
For the right brief, there are locations here that can still surprise. Places with a distinctive Valencian character sit alongside others capable of becoming somewhere else entirely on camera. That combination opens up possibilities across fashion, lifestyle, sport, automotive and other creative production briefs - whether the treatment calls for contemporary architecture, historic Europe, Mediterranean coastline or something much less expected.
And, as anyone who works in production knows, finding the right location is only part of the story. Knowing how that location works - when to shoot it, how to access it, what else can be achieved nearby and whether a beautiful reference actually translates into a workable shooting day - is where local experience becomes invaluable. That’s the side of Valencia our team particularly enjoys exploring. Not simply: what does it look like? But: what can we do with it?
As clients look for more from every production - more visual variety, greater flexibility and more creative possibility within a manageable footprint – it’s no surprise that Valencia increasingly makes sense.
Perhaps the question isn’t really why Valencia? anymore. It’s why not now?
