Sustainability Initiative: Understanding circular economy at scale

Recently, the Palma Pictures team had the opportunity to visit TIRME, the company responsible for the integrated management of urban waste in Mallorca. The visit offered a valuable first-hand look at how circular economy principles are applied at scale, turning everyday waste into materials, energy and compost.

Walking through TIRME’s facilities, we were able to better understand the full lifecycle of light packaging, organic waste and residual waste, and how each stream is carefully processed, treated and transformed. Seeing these systems in action brings clarity to a reality that often remains invisible: waste does not simply disappear, and the way it is managed has a direct environmental impact.

Beyond the technical processes, the visit highlighted the importance of long-term planning, investment in technology and collective responsibility. TIRME’s approach demonstrates how innovation, infrastructure and environmental commitment can work together to reduce landfill use, move away from traditional disposal sites, recover valuable resources and build a more sustainable model of waste management.

At Palma Pictures, sustainability is not limited to operational decisions on set. It also involves awareness, education and a deeper understanding of how our daily choices, as individuals and as a company, contribute to broader environmental outcomes. Experiences like this help our team reflect on the impact of consumption, production and disposal, and reinforce the importance of responsible practices across the audiovisual industry.

Visits such as this one are an essential part of building a more informed and conscious team. By learning from organisations that operate at the heart of environmental management, we strengthen our commitment to reducing our footprint and to promoting more sustainable ways of working, both on and off set.
